What is HTML ?

The full form of HTML is Hyper Text Markup Language. It is used to create web pages and websites. HTML is the basic language for creating web pages. Let us know what the terms hypertext, markup language mean in HTML.

What is HTML ?

Hyper Text: This is a type of text that is associated with other information(HTML documents). With this we can easily link web pages. This allows the user to browse other information faster.

Markup Language: It is a computer language that defines elements in a document. It is a human readable language. It uses standard words that are called syntax in programming. The layout of a web page can be customized with its help. By formatting the text of the text document, you can easily convert the text into headings, paragraphs, tables, links and images.

Apart from this, it is necessary to know these words:

HTML Document: HTML document contains standard words which have special importance in the markup language. These standard words together make up the document. These standard words are called elements. Elements have tags. This can be understood as:

<start tag>Content.....</end tag>

<h1>H1 Heading</h1>

Note: Everything from the start tag to the end tag is called an element.

Web Page: A web page is a document written in HTML and read by the browser. Every web page has a special URL. You can view the web page by entering the URL in the address bar of the browser. A web page may contain text, images, and hyper links that link to another web page and file. A web page can be static and dynamic. But with the help of HTML, only static web pages can be created.

The first web page was created by Tim Berners-Lee on 6 August 1991. You can visit the first Web Page at  info.cern.ch this address.

History of HTML

Tim Berners-Lee is known as the father of HTML. The first version of HTML was written by him in 1993. This was followed by various versions of HTML. Then in 2000, the most commonly used version came out which is html 4.01. The new version of HTML is HTML 5, introduced in 2011.

Different Versions of HTML

HTML was created in 1993. HTML has come a long way since then. Many versions of HTML came and HTML became more mature with each new version. A brief description of each version of HTML is given below:

1. HTML 1.0

  • This was the very first version of HTML.
  • This was a very basic version of HTML. It was released in 1991.
  • This was an early version of HTML, so it did not have support for tables and fonts.
  • W3C was not present before HTML 2.0, so it does not provide any information about HTML 1.0.

2. HTML 2.0

  • This was the second version of HTML. Which was created in 1995.
  • This was a standard version of HTML which proved to be very useful in website design.
  • HTML 2.0 provided many features. In this version, form based file uploads and basic tags of the form like text box and buttons came into existence.
  • Along with that, the table tag also came as HTML tag.
  • All browsers interpret and present HTML tags in the same way, which is why W3C was created.
  • The main purpose of W3C is to standardize the tags of HTML. So that all browsers can use them equally.

3. HTML 3.2

  • This was the third version of HTML, published in 1997.
  • HTML tags were improved in this version.
  • The W3C named this version 3.2 instead of 3.0 due to standard maintenance.
  • HTML started to support CSS with this version. HTML elements can be styled with the help of CSS. This allows HTML elements to be better displayed on the browser.

      4. HTML 4.01

      • This was the fourth version of HTML. Which was released in December 1999.
      • This was the most stable version of HTML yet. It was used for many years.
      • Support for CSS has been improved in this version. In the previous version HTML 3.2, CSS code was placed on the same page with HTML. Which required writing different CSS code for different pages. So that the same code of CSS was repeated.
      • To overcome this, the concept of adding an external CSS file was developed. According to this, an external CSS file was created and included in the HTML page and all the CSS code would be written in that file. This concept solved all the difficulties of the programmers.

          5. HTML 5

          • This is the fifth version of HTML that came out in 2008.
          • W3C and WHATWG are the two major organizations behind the development of this version.
          • Some tags have been added to HTML5 which is as follows: Password, Audio tag, Email etc.
